How Art Affects Mood: Can It Change the Way a Room Makes You Feel?

In the early 1990s, researchers at Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden ran an experiment on the walls of an intensive care unit. Each of 160 patients recovering from heart surgery was assigned a view: a large photograph of an open, tree-lined stream; a photograph of a shadowy forest; one of two abstract paintings; a white panel; or a blank wall. Patients facing the bright water-and-trees scene reported less anxiety and needed fewer doses of strong painkillers than any other group. The forest photograph did not do nearly as well. And one of the abstract pictures did worse than the blank wall.

That last detail is worth keeping. Whatever hangs on a wall is not neutral, and "art" is not one ingredient with one effect: two pictures of trees can differ as much as a picture and no picture. So the honest answer to how art affects mood is yes, measurably, but rarely in the way color-psychology charts and "calming art" listicles imply. Here is what the research supports, where it gets overstated, and how to apply it to the rooms you actually live in.


What the Evidence Shows, and Where It Stops

The broad claim has decent support. A 2021 scoping review in BMJ Open, led by Mikaela Law at the University of Auckland, gathered every study its authors could find on passively viewing visual art and stress. Thirteen of the fourteen studies that measured self-reported stress found it fell after viewing; all four that measured systolic blood pressure found the same. The authors also noted the catch: only four of the studies were randomized controlled trials, and the settings, artworks and participants varied enormously.

The most talked-about recent result arrived in October 2025, when a King's College London team led by Dr. Tony Woods reported that fifty volunteers who spent roughly twenty minutes with paintings by Manet, Van Gogh and Gauguin at the Courtauld Gallery showed an average 22 percent fall in salivary cortisol, alongside drops in two inflammatory markers. A matched group viewing reproductions in a laboratory did not show the same cortisol effect. The paper is a preprint and has not yet been peer reviewed. What matters here is a limitation that runs through nearly all of this research: it measures short encounters. Twenty minutes in a gallery. A few days in a hospital bed. Two minutes with a Monet on a phone. Almost nobody has studied what a painting does to a room over the ten years you live with it. So the useful question is not "does art reduce stress" but which ingredients of the short-term effect are likely to survive in a living room. Four stand out: the subject matter, the visual character of the image, its physical relationship to the space, and, awkwardly, the fact that you will eventually stop noticing it.


Subject Matter Is the Strongest Lever, and "Nature" Is Not One Thing

If you want one finding that holds up across studies, it is this: images of certain kinds of natural scenery lower arousal in people who are stressed, and they do so more reliably than any other category of picture.

Uppsala is one example. Another comes from Upali Nanda, an architect and researcher who has spent years testing art in hospitals. In a 2011 study at a psychiatric unit in Alabama, her team rotated three images through a patient lounge: a realistic nature image, a Van Gogh reproduction (representational but heavily stylized) and a Jackson Pollock reproduction. The outcome measure was blunt and practical: how often nurses had to give as-needed medication for anxiety and agitation. On the days the realistic nature image was on the wall, that rate was significantly lower than on days with either painting, or with no art at all. In a study published the following year, in the emergency waiting rooms of two hospitals, Nanda's team installed still and video art depicting nature and logged thirty hours of behavior at each site before and after. Restlessness, noise and staring at other people all went down. Conversation went up.

The best explanation psychologists offer is attention restoration theory, developed by Rachel and Stephen Kaplan at the University of Michigan. Natural scenes hold the eye with what the Kaplans called soft fascination: enough going on to be absorbing, not so much that you have to work at it. That lets the effortful, directed attention we spend on screens and decisions recover. In a 2008 study, Marc Berman and colleagues found that simply looking at photographs of nature, not walking in it, improved performance on a demanding attention task compared with photographs of city streets. Biophilic design frameworks such as Terrapin Bright Green's widely used 14 Patterns treat artwork depicting nature as a legitimate, if weaker, form of "visual connection with nature" for exactly this reason.

Two qualifications keep this honest. First, most of these participants were ill, waiting or frightened. Nanda's own 2008 survey found that hospital patients preferred realistic nature scenes while interior design and architecture students preferred quite different images; a healthy adult who loves abstraction is under no obligation to take decorating advice from an intensive care unit. Second, look again at Uppsala. The shadowy forest lost to the open stream. Not all nature imagery calms. Roger Ulrich, who ran the study, described the winning picture as a landscape with water, trees and high visual depth, and the scenes that perform best across this literature share those traits: open, light, legible, often with water and a visible horizon. A dense, dark or enclosed landscape is a different stimulus, however green it is.

For a room whose job is to lower the temperature, then, a luminous, open landscape is the evidence-backed choice, and it is worth being picky about which one. When browsing original landscape paintings, put a bright coastal or river scene next to a deep forest interior and notice how differently your shoulders respond. That difference is the Uppsala result in miniature.

Color: Less Certain Than the Charts Suggest

Nearly every article on this subject includes a color wheel of feelings: blue for calm, red for energy, yellow for optimism, green for balance. The research is more cautious. In their 2014 review for the Annual Review of Psychology, Andrew Elliot and Markus Maier, two of the most cited researchers in the field, concluded that color psychology was still at a "nascent stage of development" and that considerable work on boundary conditions and real-world generalizability was needed before recommendations for application were warranted. Color does produce effects in the laboratory, but they depend heavily on context, and many of the classic findings come from tasks that have little to do with looking at a painting in a lit room.

There is also a matter of proportion. A 60 by 80 cm canvas occupies a small share of your visual field; the walls, floor, ceiling and daylight occupy the rest. A painting's color is read against that background rather than in isolation. A still life of poppies in saturated red will act as the emotional thermostat of an otherwise white, neutral room; the same canvas in a space already full of pattern and warm wood registers as one voice in a chorus. Neither is wrong, but the room, not the paint, decides which you get.

What the room-level evidence supports more consistently is tonal key, meaning how light or dark the image is overall. The dark forest at Uppsala lost to the bright stream; the emergency-room installations were bright nature imagery. As a practical matter, that is a more dependable guide than hue. If you want a painting to calm, favor a high-key, luminous image whether it is blue, green or gold. If you want it to bring energy to a dining room or a hallway, saturated color and strong contrast will do that work, and flower paintings are among the easiest ways to introduce a concentrated dose of it without committing to a colored wall.


Contour and Complexity: What the Eye Decides Before You Do

Some of the most interesting findings have nothing to do with subject or color. In 2006, Moshe Bar and Maital Neta at Harvard Medical School flashed images of objects and abstract shapes for 84 milliseconds, far too fast for deliberate judgment, and asked people whether they liked them. Curved versions were preferred over sharp-angled ones, and in a follow-up brain-imaging study the sharp-angled objects produced more activity in the amygdala, a region involved in processing threat. In 2013, Oshin Vartanian and colleagues showed people photographs of interiors while scanning their brains and found that curvilinear rooms were more often judged beautiful than rectilinear ones, with the curved spaces activating a reward-linked region of the anterior cingulate cortex. Pleasantness, rather than excitement, accounted for most of the beauty ratings.

Then there is the fractal research led by the physicist Richard Taylor at the University of Oregon. Many natural forms, from clouds to coastlines to branching trees, repeat their patterns at smaller and smaller scales, and Taylor's group has found that people consistently prefer images with a mid-range "fractal dimension," roughly between 1.3 and 1.5. Taylor argues this is why Jackson Pollock's poured paintings, which contain similar structure, appeal to so many people, and his group reports measurable reductions in physiological stress when viewers look at mid-range fractal patterns. The size of that effect is debated, but the underlying point is solid: the eye seems to be at ease with a certain density of natural-looking detail, and uneasy with both barren emptiness and hard-edged clutter.

Put those findings together and "abstract art" stops being a useful category. A soft-edged color field, a Pollock-style drip painting and a hard-edged geometric composition are three different stimuli. The first two have curved, fractal-like structure and tend to read as restful or absorbing; the third has the sharp transitions that Bar and Neta's work associates with alertness. It is telling that the abstract picture which did worse than a blank wall at Uppsala was, in Ulrich's words, "dominated by straight-edged forms," and that some patients reacted to it strongly enough that it had to be taken down. Browsing Benarto's abstract collection with contour in mind, rather than with "abstract versus realistic" in mind, is a far better predictor of how a piece will sit in a room.

Impressionism, incidentally, occupies a sweet spot in this framework: natural subject matter, broken brushwork with moderate complexity, and almost no hard edges. It is probably not a coincidence that impressionist paintings remain a default choice for bedrooms and living rooms. The style was delivering soft fascination a century before anyone had a name for it.


The Room Does Half the Work

A 40 by 50 cm print can look surprisingly lonely above a three-meter sofa. Nothing is wrong with the print; the trouble is the relationship between the picture and the wall around it, and no amount of soothing subject matter rescues a piece that reads as lost. Scale and placement are where psychology hands over to design, and the design conventions are worth knowing because they are, in effect, rules about attention.

The first is height. Galleries and museums commonly hang work so that its center sits around 57 inches (about 145 cm) from the floor, roughly average adult eye level, and interior designers often stretch that to 57 to 62 inches depending on ceilings and furniture. Above a sofa or headboard, the usual guidance is to keep the bottom of the frame 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) above the furniture. The psychological logic is simple. A picture at eye height is one you actually look at; a picture hung high to "fill the wall" becomes wallpaper within a week.

The second is width. The designers' two-thirds rule holds that art above a piece of furniture should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of that furniture's width, whether as one canvas or a grouped arrangement. A 220 cm sofa wants about 145 to 165 cm of art above it. Treat this as a guide rather than a law, but understand what it protects against: a piece that is too small creates a low-level visual tension that undercuts whatever mood the image was supposed to bring.

The third is position relative to how you use the room, which almost no one thinks about. The hospital studies worked because the art sat in the sightline of people who were sitting still. At home, the equivalent is the wall you face from your usual seat, or the first thing you see when you open the front door, not the wall behind you. If a painting is meant to calm you, it belongs opposite the sofa or the bed, not above it. If it is meant to lift energy, a hallway, a landing or the wall you pass on the way to the kitchen is the right spot, because you meet it in motion, briefly, many times a day.


The Part Nobody Tells You: You Will Stop Seeing It

Here is the uncomfortable fact about art and mood at home. In their 2024 book Look Again, the neuroscientist Tali Sharot and the legal scholar Cass Sunstein describe how the brain habituates: neurons stop responding to anything that stays constant and poses no threat, freeing resources for whatever is new. A painting you loved on day one is, by month six, mostly invisible. That is not a failure of the painting or of your taste. It is what brains do.

Habituation sits alongside a better-known and apparently opposite effect. In 2003, James Cutting at Cornell showed that people preferred Impressionist paintings that appeared more often in library books over closely matched paintings that appeared less often, and the preference had nothing to do with whether they recognized the pictures. Familiarity breeds liking. So two things are true at once: you come to like the piece on your wall more, and you notice it less. The affection stays. The jolt fades.

The practical response is to design for both. The ambient contribution of a good painting, the way it sets the tonal key of a room, persists whether or not you consciously attend to it. The attentional contribution, the moment of being pulled in, can be revived by change. Sharot and Sunstein's prescription is to alter the environment: move a piece to another room, swap two paintings between rooms, or add one new work, which resets attention for everything near it. Even a picture light switched on in the evening changes a painting enough to make it new again.

This is also the strongest practical argument for keeping a mix of formats. Rotating a large stretched canvas is a two-person job; rotating works on paper takes five minutes. A small group of fine art paper and canvas prints that you change with the seasons will do more for how a room feels over a year than a single expensive piece you have stopped seeing. Meaning Is the Multiplier

One more finding pulls all of this together. In 2022, researchers at the University of Vienna led by MacKenzie Trupp and Matthew Pelowski asked 84 people to spend one to two minutes with an online exhibition of Monet's The Water-Lily Pond, or with a similar display about Japanese food culture. Even that brief exposure reduced negative mood, anxiety and loneliness. The detail that matters for anyone choosing art: the size of the improvement tracked how beautiful and how personally meaningful each viewer found the experience. The image was the same for everyone. The effect was not.

That is the answer for the reader who loves a bold, angular, saturated abstract and is now worried it is bad for them. The categories above describe tendencies in populations, and they are a sensible starting point when you are choosing for a room rather than for yourself, or when you are not sure what you want. But a painting of a coastline you know, or an abstract that recalls a particular period of your life, carries a charge that no generic "calming landscape" can match. The workplace research points the same way. In Craig Knight and Alex Haslam's 2010 office experiments, people working in spaces decorated with art and plants were 17 percent more productive than those in bare ones, but people allowed to choose the decoration themselves were 32 percent more productive. Choosing is part of the effect.

A Short Way to Decide

Rather than a rulebook, here is a sequence that respects the evidence without letting it overrule you.

Decide what job the room has. Bedrooms, reading corners and the wall you face from the sofa are for lowering arousal. Hallways, dining rooms and entrances can carry more energy. A home office wants something absorbing enough to rest the eye but not enough to compete with the work; a luminous landscape opposite the desk fits the attention-restoration research neatly.

For calm, favor open, light, legible scenes, soft contour and a mid-range density of detail. For energy, saturated color and strong contrast, placed where you move rather than where you sit. Treat "abstract" and "realistic" as unhelpful labels and look at edges, tonality and complexity instead.

Get the physical relationship right before you fall in love: center at roughly eye level, width in proportion to the furniture, position in the sightline of the person who will actually be looking.

Then, within those limits, buy the piece that pulls at you, because meaning is what turns a general tendency into a personal effect.
