Inspired by Monet

A still pond seen from the bank, its surface almost entirely covered with lily pads. A channel of reflected sky runs diagonally through the middle of the canvas — pale blue, lavender and white, the brightest passage in the painting. Around it the water darkens to deep brown and plum, and the pads float in cream, olive and dusty rose, each one a single loaded stroke. Green foliage crowds in from the left bank; the right side falls away into shadow, with a thin flicker of warm ochre where light catches the far trees. The paint is worked wet into wet and left visible. In the lit centre it stands up off the canvas in thick, broken touches, so the sparkle on the water is physical rather than painted — small flecks of pure blue, pink and white sit on top of the darker layer. Toward the edges the handling loosens into soft, dragged strokes, keeping the eye on the bright channel of sky. An original oil on canvas by Sergey Polyakov, a Ukrainian painter trained at the Kyiv National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture. The title nods to Monet's water gardens, but the palette is cooler and the touch more abrupt. Signed lower left.
