Melody Of The Sun

A rocky shore seen straight into the light. A path of sun runs from the horizon toward the viewer, broken into hundreds of small square touches of white, silver and pale blue, so the water reads as a mosaic of moving light. Dark headlands and two isolated rocks stand as flat silhouettes against it, and a broken jetty or reef cuts a low horizontal line across the middle distance. To the right a wave curls in deep emerald and turquoise, the only saturated colour in the painting. In the foreground the wet stones are painted in long violet and plum strokes, scattered with sharp flecks of blue and lemon where the light catches the water running back off them. The palette is unusual for a sunlit subject — cool, almost nocturnal, with the brightness carried by contrast rather than by warm colour. The paint is applied in confident, separate marks with no blending, closer to a mosaic than to a wash. Seen from a distance the marks resolve into moving water; up close they stay frankly abstract.
