Red Bloom

A square canvas almost entirely given over to poppies. The horizon sits high, with a line of dark trees and a blue ridge, and below it a meadow where every petal is a single dab of red, orange or carmine.

Tyunkin paints the near flowers big and loose and the far ones small and tight, which gives the field real depth. Of his poppy pictures, this is the most saturated. Oil on canvas, 70 × 70 cm. The square format works well over a console or as the center of a group of frames.
