Spring Outside

White blossom against a deep cobalt sky, as strong a contrast as you can get with two colors. The tree leans over the wall of a village house, and a pale road runs on past the roofs. The flowers are built up in creamy oil impasto, the wall in ochre and olive. Spring Outside is one of the happiest pictures in Tyunkin's series of southern villages, and the vertical format and clean light make it work well in a bright room.
