Spring Scent

Branches of white blossom spray out across the top of the canvas from a plain cream jug, the flowers touched with pink at their centres and painted as separate flicks of thick white paint. Against the dark background the blossom reads almost as light itself rather than as flowers. On the metal tray below, an orange sits beside a cut wedge, its flesh the warmest note in the picture. Cherries are scattered loose across the tray and the table; a shallow green footed bowl and a second dark vessel stand behind. The tablecloth is a strong emerald green, brushed in wide horizontal strokes, and the background behind the arrangement moves from deep green through to crimson and violet without ever becoming a describable wall. The whole picture is painted quickly and thickly, largely with a knife. Edges are broken, the tray is suggested rather than drawn, and the colour is pushed well past what was in front of the artist. It is a picture about the feeling of early spring rather than a record of a table.
This is an original oil painting, personally signed by Sergei Chernyakovsky.
