Warm Evening

A tree in full blossom fills the left half of the canvas, its flowers built from hundreds of small dabs of cream, white and pale grey laid over a warm rust-red trunk and branches. Behind it a broad cliff or hillside catches the last of the evening light, glowing apricot and ochre against a lavender sky. At the foot of the cliff, a line of small buildings and a row of thin poplars are indicated in a few gold and grey strokes. The right foreground opens into a green meadow, painted in loose horizontal sweeps of sap green and grey-blue, with a strip of dark water or shadow separating it from the village beyond. This is thick, physical painting. The blossom stands well off the surface in heavy touches; the cliff is dragged on with a loaded brush so the ridges catch real light; the meadow, by contrast, is thin and quick. That contrast between dense blossom and open field is what holds the picture together.
