Illuminated Mandarin

A peeled mandarin, almost a meter wide on the canvas, with two segments lying beside it. Behind it, a flat black rectangle and a cool gray ground with small colored flecks. Ihor Khmil, from Ivano-Frankivsk, is known for hyperrealist still lifes, and the fruit here is astonishing: the translucent pulp, the white pith, the bright skin. Then he puts it inside a frame that is pure modern graphic design. The scale and the contrast make it a real presence in a kitchen or a contemporary living room.
