Pomegranates

A row of ripe pomegranates, some whole, some cracked open with ruby seeds spilling out, on a canvas 130 cm long and only 38 cm high.

In oil, Ihor Khmil paints the leathery skins and the seeds with hyperrealist precision and sets them against a dark brown band with white space around it, which gives the picture a clean, modern feel. That very long format is rare and useful: it fits above a sideboard, a kitchen counter or a bed where nothing else does.
