Sea At Dawn

Two thirds of this canvas is sky. Heavy cumulus clouds pile up in soft greys and violets, and behind them the first light of the day spreads in pale gold and cream along the horizon — cool, not warm; the sun itself has not yet appeared. The light comes through a gap high on the left, catching the tops of the clouds and leaving their undersides in shadow. Below the horizon the sea is dark green-grey and running low. Two lines of surf break across the picture, their foam painted in dry, broken white that lets the darker water show through. In the foreground the last wave has already spent itself and lies as a thin sheet across wet sand, mirroring the pale gold of the sky. The handling is quiet and deliberate. Edges are softened, contrast is held back, and the whole picture is kept within a narrow band of grey, green and cream — the discipline of a painter who trusts tone over colour. An original oil painting by Yuri Pryadko, a Ukrainian realist whose landscapes and seascapes work in exactly this register.
