Still Life With Rose

A dark, low-lit still life. A heavy grey-blue jug stands at the centre, painted in broad flat planes that catch the light on one side and disappear into the background on the other. Above and to the left, a single rose opens in white and deep pink against olive leaves — the one clear, fully described form in the picture. Dried stems and spent blooms fan out behind the jug into the warm brown darkness. Along the bottom edge the arrangement collapses into fallen matter: bruised plum, ochre and crimson shapes that read as blossoms or fruit without ever resolving. Cutting through them is a bold horizontal slash of cobalt blue — a cloth, or simply a decision — that lifts the whole lower register and keeps the picture from sinking. The paint is laid on with a knife in flat, decisive strokes, and large areas are left as bare tone. Much is deliberately unfinished; the eye is given one rose to hold and left to guess the rest.
