White Bouquet

A dozen cream-white roses stand in a tall amber glass vase, filling the upper half of the canvas. The blooms are at their fullest — outer petals just beginning to open and curl back, centres still tight and touched with pale yellow. Dark green leaves push out at the sides. Below, the vase narrows to a heavy amber foot, and through the glass you can see the stems standing in water, refracted and slightly displaced. One rose has been laid on the table to the right, turned to face the viewer. A few loose petals and a single green leaf lie scattered across the pale surface. The background is a soft grey-lavender wall with no detail at all, so nothing competes with the flowers. The handling is patient and close: petal edges are drawn with a fine brush, the amber glass is built from warm transparent glazes, and the whole picture is lit from the left by a soft, even light with no hard shadows. Nothing is stylised. An original oil on canvas by Ivan Volkov, an artist whose entire subject is flowers.
